Less steampunk

Disney has finally confirmed the existence of the Epic Mickey project, a videogame set to be created by Junction Point and aiming to create a very complex experience based upon the large character cast that Disney controls. The game is designed exclusively for the Nintendo Wii home console and should be released at some point during the next fall.

Initial reports related to the existence of Epic Mickey appeared in late 2008, with Gamasutra being the main outlet offering images and details regarding the mechanics of the game.

The new reveal comes courtesy of Game Informer magazine and mentions that players will be controlling Mickey Mouse as he moves around a world devoid of color, painting it back to life. The inhabitants of the game world are older, sometimes forgotten characters from the Disney vault apparently suspicious of Mickey because of the success that he has found at their expense.

Epic Mickey was initially thought to only be the working title of the project but it seems that Disney has kept it for the full project. Development duties on the title are being handled by Junction Point, a development studio headed up by Warren Spector.

It was founded way back in 2005 and is staffed by some veterans from the Ion Storm Austin development team. Disney bought Junction Point in 2007 and since then, Warren Spector, who is best known for creating Ultima and the hybrid Deus Ex, has been working on Epic Mickey.

The main thing that seems to be changed in the official announcement is the look of the game. The initial artwork had a more steampunk bend, while the cover of Game Informer, which bears art offered directly by Disney, and can be seen in the screenshot attached to the article, is looking like the company’s modern animation movies.
