The company is looking for a replacement to drive performance

John Riccitiello, the current chief executive officer at publisher Electronic Arts, announces that he is resigning from the company starting with March 30, mainly because of the poorer than expected financial performance during the last fiscal year.

EA says that the leadership position will be taken over by Larry Probst, who has previously also served as CEO.

His position is temporary and the publisher is interviewing candidates from within and outside the company.

The resignation letter is quoted by VG247 as stating, "It currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued in January, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. EA’s shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss."

The recent SimCity launch trouble has probably also contributed to the decision.
