The development team at ZeniMax Online and publisher Bethesda announce that the North American mega-server for their The Elder Scrolls Online is now under maintenance, which will probably last for a few hours.

The team is making the announcement on the official Twitter feed, but does not offer clear details about the changes that it is making to the MMO or about how long gamers will be unable to access it.

Once maintenance in North America is complete, the two companies will also bring down the European mega-server for the title in order to perform the same changes.

ZeniMax Online has been using these periods to introduce new content to the MMO, but the company has made a habit of only posting patch notes, if any are available, after the maintenance period is complete.

The Elder Scrolls Online is designed to take gamers to Tamriel and allows them to choose from a variety of races that can join three alliances fighting over control of the continent in order to try to stop the threat of a Daedra and its powerful army.

The title is subscription based, which is becoming a rarity in the genre, and the publisher has not yet offered clear information on how many players are engaged with the MMO at the moment.

UPDATE: The maintenance has been completed but no info about the changes to The Elder Scrolls Online has been offered.
