Remote Desktop Connection Manager is a free Microsoft solution designed to simplify the management of multiple remote desktop connections from a remote location. According to the Redmond company, IT administrators already familiar with the MMC Remote Desktops snap-in, will discover that the Remote Desktop Connection Manager (RDCMan) brings to the table similar functionality. Essentially, IT admins can turn to both the RDCMan and the Remote Desktops snap-in in order to perform administrative tasks on multiple machines from a single remote machine.

“RDCMan manages multiple remote desktop connections. It is useful for managing server labs where you need regular access to each machine such as automated checkin systems and data centers. It is similar to the built-in MMC Remote Desktops snap-in, but more flexible,” Microsoft stated.

According to the Redmond company, RDCMan is designed to play nice with operating systems such as Windows 7; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008; Windows Server 2008 R2; Windows Vista. “Users using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 will need to obtain version 6 or newer of the Remote Desktop Connection client software,” the software giant added.

Unlike the Remote Desktops snap-in that is offered as a part of Windows, the Remote Desktop Connection Manager needs to be downloaded and installed manually. RDCMan is available through the Microsoft Download Center free of charge. The snap-in could be installed together with the RD Connection Broker role service on Windows Server, Microsoft explained.

As far as Windows Server 2008 R2 is concerned, “Remote Desktop Connection Manager (RD Connection Manager) enables you to configure and manage resources that are available to users through RemoteApp and Desktop Connection. These resources include RemoteApp programs and virtual desktops. Virtual desktops include virtual machines in virtual desktop pools and personal virtual desktops,” the Redmond company explained.
