Mozilla has officially announced the release of Thunderbird 8.0 Stable, which is based on Gecko 8 engine. Most users already knew what to expect of this version of the email client, as far as the built-in functionality goes.

Features like disabling third-party add-ons by default or the new shortcuts for Search and Find as well as improved access to the attachment list or removal of Smart Folders pane were to be expected.

Besides this, the latest Thunderbird extends its functionality through fully integrated add-ons, such as Lightning, by Mozilla Calendar Project. It will help you keep events organized in a calendar that perfectly fits the frame of the email client.

Thunderbird add-on collection is pretty scanty at the moment, with Lightning, OpenSearch (search the web from the client) and Thunderbird Conversations being the only ones available. But the list is bound to get bigger, offering increased productivity.
