Apple this week released a new beta of OS X Mountain Lion to those enrolled with its annual seeding program. Build 12F13 is immediately available for testing to all Apple registered developers.

Developers eager to test OS X Mavericks may have missed a less significant release from Apple this week, namely OS X 10.8.5, a new version of the company’s current-selling desktop OS.

OS X Mountain Lion is still the latest platform to deploy your app on, therefore testing your software against version 10.8.5 may be advisable.

OS X 10.8.5 doesn’t have a solid release date yet, but there’s a good chance it won’t be in development for long, with OS X Mavericks launching this fall.

To grab OS X 10.8.5, as well as to review the seed note, simply visit Apple’s Dev Center with your developer credentials in hand.

According to people familiar with the software, the beta has no known issues and asks testers to focus on core areas of the OS, including Wi-Fi, Graphics, Wake from Sleep, PDF viewing and Accessibility, and Mobile Device Management.

As usual, the Cupertino giant is urging programmers to be aware that they will not be able to revert back to their previous system after updating.

“Please install this update on a system you are prepared to erase if necessary,” Apple says, according to developers.

OS X 10.8.5 build 12F13 is being provided to registered Apple devs for testing and development purposes.

Testers who encounter any bugs are asked to submit a bug report using the online Bug Reporter at bugreporter.apple.com.

Developers must ensure that they include “10.8.5 (12F13)” in the bug filing along with a title and description, so that the information gets processed quickly and effectively.

Xcode 4.6.3, posted June 13, is also available as a free download from Apple’s Dev Center.
