Yui Tanimura, the director of the coming Dark Souls 2, says that the improved game engine used allows his team to introduce a number of new gameplay mechanics.

He tells Polygon that gimmicks are now possible, which will enhance the experience for all players.

He says, “Things like representing an enemy that is perhaps off-screen but with movement of shadows, or that kind of expression in the game. It’s something that always wanted to do but wasn’t able to do with the previous engine.”

Dark Souls 2 will include a number of similar ideas, but Tanimura was not willing to give any more of them away before launch.

Dark Souls 2 is set to appear on the PC, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft at some point in March 2014.
