Covers 58% of the population

Wireless carrier Cosmote recently announced the launch of commercial 3G network in Romania. According to the company, 11 cities in the country can enjoy its new services, including Bucharest, Iasi, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Constanta, Galati, Craiova, Brasov, Moinesti, Oltenita and Orastie. At the same time, the network offers 3G connectivity to over 300 localities close to these cities.

The new 3G network deployed by Cosmote provides coverage to around 58 percent of the population in Romania, the carrier announced. Moreover, it stated that the network should deliver Internet access at speeds of up to 21.6 Mbps. The new 3G services add to the carrier's existing CDMA network, which provides Internet access at speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps.

“We are very pleased to offer 3G services to our customers. Mobile broadband is already demonstrating its enormous market potential and Cosmote is fast establishing its position as a strong player in Romania. Through faster data speeds, a high quality network fully aligned to all communication needs and best traffic volume at the most advantageous tariff plans, Mobile Internet users can now enjoy the Cosmote 3G experience,” Stefanos Theocharopoulos, CEO, Cosmote Romania, commented on the launch.

At the same time, the wireless carrier's CEO reaffirmed Cosmote's plans on delivering the most appealing offerings to its customers, stating that the roll-out of 3G services is just a step the company takes in this direction. According to a recent article on cellular-news, the deployment of Cosmote's new network follows recent enhancements the company made to its GPRS data network, which was upgraded to EDGE.

Cosmote Romania is one of the three major wireless services providers operating is Romania, beside Orange and Vodafone. Member of the Greek-based COSMOTE Group, the carrier launched its commercial operations in the country in 2005, and it ended 2009 with a customer base of 6.9 million users, 1 million of them being added last year alone.
