The former goes with LED-backlit LCD, the latter is an OLED

It seems like only yesterday LG and Samsung had problems with making OLED technology work well in panel sizes larger than 55 inches. Both companies dealt with the situation in their own way, but neither stopped until they reached 8K resolution.

Samsung solved the problem by not bothering with it, we suppose you could say. While it hasn't given up on OLED TVs, they haven't become a focus either.

Instead, it went back to liquid crystal displays and did all it could to optimize that technology, leading to the creation of a 110-inch nano-crystal LED display with a native resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels.

Meanwhile, LG invested a lot of money, time and effort into OLED technology, finally creating a 98-inch beast of a display with the same resolution.

The Samsung 8K LCD TV

Samsung didn't share many other specs of the device at the Consumer Electronics Show currently taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada.

But it's not like it needs to. Since this is more of a proof of concept, we can't expect it to be put up for order any time soon. Which is probably for the best, as the price can't be easy on the faint of heart.

As if the 8K sheer quality wasn't enough, the display can actually produce 3D images as well, without the need for glasses!

There are some issues with this, as people who saw the display in person when it switched to 3D reported feeling nauseous or drunk when it happened. Well, some of them did. Still, this definitely shows that display technology is moving forward in leaps instead of small steps.

Samsung also has a 98-inch 8K TV at CES, apparently without 3D support but no less capable otherwise.

LG's 98-inch 8K OLED TV

LG must have won the shadow war that was still being fought over OLED supremacy back in September, during IFA 2014.

ColorPrime Nano Spectrum and ULTRA Luminescence technologies are in full swing here, and OLED by nature has deeper, crisper blacks and colors in general, so this is an advantage that trumps even Samsung's achievements on the 110-inch LCD screen above.

LG wasn't any more forthcoming with pricing and availability information than Samsung, but you can be sure that the 98-inch 8K OLED TV, with or without 3D, will cost as much as a luxury car if not two.
