Darby McDevitt, the leading script writer working on Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, says that gamers will find the game to offer more freedom than any other title in the franchise.

He tells Polygon that the experience will be "more open and free than ever before."

Apparently gamers will get to make decisions, even if they will no influence the core story of the game.

Darby McDevitt is not yet willing to talk about the way Templars will fit into the narrative of Black Flag, but he does reveal that their presence will be built around characters drawn from three different empires that have interest in the Caribbean.

Assassin's Creed 4 will be built around the naval battle mechanics that were introduced in 2012.

The game is expected to launch in October on the PC, the Wii U, the Wii, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.
