Developer Alientrap announces the release of Apotheon, the side-scrolling role-playing game inspired by Greek mythology, on February 3.

The game features a unique visual style, based on Greek pottery, and establishes a strong atmosphere through music and its theme.

The main premise of the game sees you rise to glory and become a hero in a time of turmoil, when all the gods have turned wrathful.

You have to strip defeated gods of their powers and use them yourself, traveling through the underworld and finally ascending Mount Olympus, trying to put a stop to the impending apocalypse.

Your mission is based on the legend of Hercule's labors, and you will get to meet a ton of interesting creatures and travel through locales represented in the unique, minimalist fashion you can see in the trailer below.

The game features a ton of fighting, offering gamers spears, shields, swords, bows and a ton of other weapons to make use of during your journey to save mankind, and you can even lob boulders at your opponents.

A game with a ton of potential

Apotheon is touted as a game that offers a rich experience, in the vein of the classic Metroid and Castlevania franchises, a complete experience where you have to explore, solve puzzles, defeat bosses, gain new abilities to enhance your combat prowess, and so on.

The launch trailer shows some interesting-looking landscapes and action sequences, and the artistic direction, being able to convey so much with so little, seems to be by far the title's greatest asset.

Alientrap's other projects are Autocraft, a physics destruction sandbox game where you get to create your own cars, tanks, rockets and whatever else you can think of, and Capsized, a 2D action platformer focused on exploration.

Apotheon is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PC platforms on February 3 and will be free for the month of February to PlayStation Plus members.
