The figure will rise to 50 million by the end of 2017

Jesse Divnich, who is watching the video game industry for EEDAR, believes that the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the unannounced Xbox 720 from Microsoft will generate 11 million sales before the end of 2014.

The number is impressive considering the limited sales excitement generated by the Wii U from Nintendo, which launched late last year.

GamesIndustry cites the analyst as saying that, “By the end of 2017, this will balloon to over 50 million consumers, all willing to spend money to consume quality content.”

Divnich also believes that the mobile gaming market is becoming oversaturated and that many developers will swing back to home console and the PC in coming years.

Sony says that it knows the launch date for the PlayStation 4, but it is not yet willing to reveal it publicly.

Microsoft is expected to reveal the Xbox 720 in a May 21 event.
