Video game developer Gearbox and publisher SEGA have released the first developer diary linked to Aliens: Colonial Marines, the first-person shooter that uses the classic science-fiction setting to deliver both a deep single-player campaign and a number of multiplayer modes.

The video sees studio leader Randy Pitchford and some of the other members of the development team talking about the core elements of the game and about how they created the various new alien enemies that will make an appearance.

The new Aliens game is not tied with the Prometheus movie that was launched this year, but it will borrow a number of elements from the wider mythology of the franchise, including the design of some enemies and the overall concept.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 in early 2013 and the Nintendo Wii U is also set to get a version of the game.
