The upgrade was announced by HTC, but it's nowhere to be found

HTC has recently announced the release of a firmware update for AT&T Tilt, which should upgrade the handset to the latest Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. Launched back in 2007, the Tilt is AT&T's version of HTC TyTN II (also known as HTC Kaiser).

According to HTC, the new firmware (ROM Version 3.57.502.2 WWE) should bring, besides the 6.1 WM, the following:

- HTC Home;

- Threaded SMS;

- Video Share Calling;

- OneNote Mobile;

- MS Voice Command;

- Remote Desktop Monitor;

- Managed Programs;

- Enroll Domain;

- PTT Button is available for reassignment under Start / Settings / Buttons.

To get the firmware update, users must visit HTC's official website, found at this address. Although it's said that the new ROM has 88MB in size, the downloadable file actually has only 70.9MB. Which means that HTC might have forgotten to come up with the right file - despite the fact that the website says the Windows Mobile 6.1 is available as of August 6.

Since I don't have an AT&T Tilt to try out the firmware, I guess Tilt owners will have to find out for themselves if the update is indeed available or if they need to wait a bit longer until the new Windows Mobile OS gets friendly with their devices.

For those new to the Tilt, who might want to know more details about it, the Pocket PC brings the following features: internal GPS and A-GPS, Wi-Fi, a 2.8 inch TFT touchscreen display with 240 x 320 pixels and handwriting recognition, a full QWERTY keyboard, quad-band GSM connectivity, tri-band HSDPA connectivity, a 3.15 Megapixel camera with auto focus and flash, Bluetooth 2.0, expandable memory and so on.

The Tilt is currently available from AT&T for $199.99 with a two-year contract agreement and after having benefited from a $100 mail-in rebate. Its retail price is of $449.99.

UPDATE: HTC has modified the Tilt update page, and now it doesn't show the WM 6.1 upgrade anymore. So, in the end, the AT&T Tilt can't be (for the moment, at least) upgraded to the latest Windows Mobile 6.1. I'm sure this is not at all good news for its owners, so HTC and AT&T should hurry up and come with the upgrade as soon as possible.

UPDATE No. 2: Windows Mobile 6.1 did came to AT&T Tilt in the end. Go to this article for more details.
