The new filament system makes it possible to use any color combination you want

All the rage in the 3D printing hobbyist circles these days is multi-color printing. But that requires printers with multiple extruders and quite a bit of experience. There are more and more multiple extruder machines coming out, but none of them is cheap.

An alternative to this is to use a single multi-colored filament. That's great if you want your objects to be rainbow colored all around or are satisfied with the pattern the filament maker created.

But the new Stick Filament system aims to make it possible to get the colors you want for the parts you want. The idea is rather simple and ingenious.

The Stick Filament, as the name suggests, is made up of filament sticks which hook into each other. You buy multiple color sticks and then arrange them in the order you want, getting some control over the final pattern.

"Stick Filament is the new filament system easy, colored and smart. Choose the material, choose the colors, simply join the sticks and then print your object," the company behind the product boasts.

The Stick Filament is now available in Styrene and PLA versions, both 3 mm in diameter. The company behind Stick Filament is experimenting with 1.75 mm versions.

The new filament system should work with all common FDM/FFF (fused deposition modeling/fused filament fabrication) printers.

The Stick Filament can be purchased in three versions. A mix pack of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) sticks, 15 sticks in each of the five colors, sells for €12,90 ($17.31).

The same mix with PLA sticks sells for the same price. Finally, a Photolum Pack of photoluminescent HIPS sticks sells for €18.90 ($22.68). All of these are available for pre-order but aren't shipping yet. When the company has a minimum of 100 pre-orders, it will start charging people and shipping the product. There are 21 pre-orders now.
