The three iPhones that Apple unveiled on September 12 will all have at least one successor, according to super-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The Cupertino-based tech giant plans to introduce three different iPhone models in 2019 using the same dimensions as the current generation.
In other words, the next-year lineup will include a 5.8-inch iPhone, a 6.1-inch LCD version, and a 6.5-inch new Max model with OLED.
Previously, it was believed that Apple might give up on LCD completely as part of the company’s transition to OLED, but if Kuo is accurate, the company isn’t aiming for this change in the short term.
LCD to stick around for one more year
However, there’s a chance that LCD would be dropped in 2020 or 2021, according to reports that made the rounds earlier this year, as Apple still sees OLED as the only way to go in terms of display technology. The company may just need more time to adjust OLED production capacity, and only then make the full switch to this type of display.
The launch of the iPhone X was pushed back in 2017 due to low inventory, especially as suppliers struggle to meet Apple’s requirements for Face ID and the notched display. This year, Apple is believed to have worked with LG for the screen of the iPhone XS Max, a move that allows it to reduce reliance on Samsung.
The South Korean rival was the one building iPhone X OLED displays, and this particular component was the most expensive part of the entire device. The original iPhone X was available from $999 in the United States, and the same pricing is being used for the iPhone XS too.
As it happens every year, the 2019 iPhones will launch in September next year, so expect more reports on the upcoming models to make the rounds beginning with January.
