Japan’s Macotakara is citing several sources as saying that Apple is preparing to commence “field testing” of its rumored budget iPhone for release later this year.

Not too surprising, considering all the rumors flying around regarding Apple’s cheap iPhone model. But the Japanese report includes other tidbits as well. Namely, the colors of the new device.

Apparently, the company will try to sell the new device not only on price, but also on looks, and will use a rainbow of colors to do so.

A rough translation from the Japanese-language report reads: “I have 2 information about color variation of cheaper iPhone from several sources. The first set is Navy, Gold Orange, White and Gray, and 2nd is White, Pink, Green, Blue and Yellow-orange.”

To be noted that neither color set includes a black version of the handset, which seems highly unlikely.

The source also said that Apple has ordered production of 1,000 units of the cheaper iPhone for “field testing” in June, while mass production will commence in the July-September timeframe for shipping later this year.
