there much of commercial quality freeware games out there, some of them can be found on www.gamehippo.com, and some game have released for free
example :
- Quake 2/3
- Mech Commander series
- C&C original
albeit this was old but still they really good
and Eragon has stated few games that have conmmercial product quality, and i can add a few more:

- Cube (fps)
