Mario and Sonic are the characters that show the youngsters of today what gaming used to be and the fact that they still appear in games is a respectable thing.
I agree, Mario did show some signs of dying when Sunshine came out and it didn't really impress anyone, but now that's taken care of. And the Sonic games have been going down the drain in the last decade but even there have been a few shiny rings in between.
