MacPaw, the maker of one of the best cleaning utilities out there, has updated its flagship product to version 1.7.1, fixing most of the user-reported bugs and errors, as well as some issues with popular virtualization programs. The new CleanMyMac also improves performance by reorganizing some code, according to its maker. CleanMyMac can delete useless files that pile up over time and waste valuable disk space, as well as slow down the system. Unlike simpler “cleaning” solutions, CleanMyMac combines features such as the ability to slim down Universal Binaries, delete unneeded languages, logs and caches, Quick Erase, application uninstallation, and the ability to fully erase trash left from buried applications. With CleanMyMac installed and run periodically, your computer will work faster and smoother. A complete list of changes made in version 1.7.1 is available below. - Fixed most of the reported bugs and errors. - Enhanced general application stability. - Fixed several bugs in different localizations. - Improved performance by reorganizing some code. - Fixed bug with truncated texts. - Added alert sheet when stop scan clicked. - Fixed some issues with Parallels and VMWare.
The company behind the Mac operating system claims that QuickTime 7.6.5 is a Windows-only release, which addresses issues with applications not reliably loading libraries required by QuickTime at startup, as well as incorrect display of QuickTime movies embedded in a webpage using custom scale attributes. QuickTime is a proprietary multimedia framework developed by Apple itself. The software is capable of handling various formats of digital video, and audio, as well as interactive content. QuickTime was first made available in Mac OS classic (System 7), and it was then followed by Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows versions. The latest version of the software, included with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, is QuickTime X (10.0). QuickTime 7.6.5 weighs in at 30.99MB and requires Windows XP (SP2 or later), Windows Vista, or Windows 7. However, Support document HT3524 talking “About QuickTime 7.6.5” reveals that the latest version of the software is aimed at Windows 7 users in particular. The company’s original description follows below. Summary QuickTime 7.6.5 is a Windows-only release that increases reliability and improves compatibility.
This week, Apple posted new updates on the Downloads section of its website, including a Server Admin Tools 10.6.2 one, an update recommended for the remote administration of Snow Leopard Server. Server Admin Tools contains remote administration tools, documentation, and utilities that you can install on a computer other than your server. The company offers more detailed information on the update on its Support section via a tech note. Support document HT3931 outlines the particularities of Apple’s Server Admin Tools for Mac OS X, as well as what’s new in each of the updated components enumerated above. The update to Server Admin, for instance, improves the stability of the Server Admin application, includes Netboot/Netinstall model filters for Macs introduced in October, 2009, and fixes an issue that could cause a cache file to grow out of bounds when Server Admin checks for server software updates from behind an authenticated web proxy.
Apple to Deliver Two Tablet PC Models in 2H10

Cupertino-based Apple has reportedly pushed back the launch of its tablet PC, which was originally slated for a March release, and now will come only in the second half of the next year. The delay seems to have been caused by a change in the components of the tablet, and also by the decision to release a model that sports a 9.7-inch OLED panel from LG Display.

A recent post on DigiTimes says that the details on the delay of Apple's tablet PC come from sources from component makers, which also stated that the manufacturing partners for the two devices would be Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Quanta Computer, and Pegatron Technology. The two models should come to the market with a 10.6-inch TFT LCD panel and with a 9.7-inch OLED panel, respectively.

Considering the fact that 9.7-inch OLED panels are priced at the moment at US$500 a piece, and that the panel costs usually rise to around 30 percent of the device's entire cost, the 9.7-inch OLED tablet PC from Apple is expected to come to the market with a cost per unit of around US$1,500-$1,700, when compared to the components prices available today. On the other hand, the prices of OLED panels are dropping and should reach an acceptable cost level for notebooks by 2011, the news site notes.

Cupertino-based company Apple seems to have already started the work on the next version of its Mac OS X platform, which is expected to hit the market as Mac OS X 10.7. The latest flavor of the operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, was launched only three months ago, yet there are already some pieces of evidence that Apple is already moving forward with the next OS release. “The information comes from an entry posted earlier today in a database of changes to the open source 'launched' framework, which oversees booting of Mac OS X and administers processes running on the system. In particular, today's entry cites an error message containing the text string '11A47', a reference to the Mac OS X build number being used.< rdar://problem/7386864> 11A47: SecurityAgent no longer visible via Accessibility,” is what a recent post on macrumors states.
iPhone to Top the Selling Charts in China

Apple's iconic device, the iPhone, has been launched in China not too long ago, via the wireless carrier China Unicom, which is very confident in the selling power of the handset. According to the mobile phone operator, it managed to sell a number of 30,000 iPhones since launching the device on October 30, and it expects the phone to become the top-selling handset in China. “We’re very confident about the market position of the iPhone,” Chang Xiaobing, China Unicom's chairman, stated recently, as Bloomberg reports. However, the news site also quotes IDC analyst Aloysius Choong, who recently stated that “Unicom must lower its prices if it wants to access the mass market for the iPhone.”The 32GB iPhone 3GS has been launched in China at the end of the last month with a price set at 6,999 yuan ($1,024), with no contract agreement needed. The cost of the handset might rise even more if a two-year service contract is taken into consideration. Moreover, China Unicom seems confident on the performance of its iPhone offer, even if the device is available in the country through the gray market. China Unicom’s Chang has reportedly mentioned that the iPhone sales on the gray market “won’t be very significant.”In China, the iPhone also faces great competiti...

Apple Was Interested in AdMob Purchase

San Mateo, California-based AdMob Inc., a company selling ads that appear on mobile phones, has been recently purchased by Google, who agreed to pay $750 million for the company. However, it seems that Google was not the only one interested in the purchase of AdMob, and that Apple also approached it with the same purpose a few weeks before the Google deal was closed. According to bloomberg, which cites a source familiar with the negotiations, which were not made public until now, both Apple and Google are very interested in the mobile-phone market, and their interest in AdMob also shows that the competition in the area is intensifying. The deal between AdMob and Google will result in the largest mobile-advertising company, which should account for around 30 to 40 percent of the market. According to Karsten Weide, an analyst with researcher IDC in San Mateo, also cited by bloomberg, Apple would have had the chance to expand into online advertising if the negotiations with AdMob had ended favorably for it. Another proof that the competition between Google and Apple on the mobile market is accentuating is the resigning of Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt from Apple’s board in July, a move that Apple CEO Steve Jobs said was necessary.
How to Install QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (Screenshots)

Those who’ve made a clean install of Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard may have noticed that Apple’s new OS replaces the old QuickTime with QuickTime X. Admittedly, the new player offers a clean and uncluttered interface, easy media sharing, and flexible recording capabilities, yet some users have been heavily relying on the features specific to the old version of QuickTime. QuickTime Player 7, as fans of the media player should know, can be used to play back formats such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime Movies, and MIDI files, and it supports QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes for access to the QuickTime Pro functionality (saving movies from the web, and more). Should you need it, a Snow Leopard-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is available for use with older media or with existing AppleScript-based workflows. But where to find it? Where else, if not on the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD? To install the QuickTime Player 7 alongside QuickTime X in Snow Leopard... 1. Insert your Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD. 2. Open the Optional Installs folder and double-click "Optional Installs.mpkg." 3. Select the QuickTime 7 option and click Continue. 4.
Apple Improves App Store Admission / Rejection Process

Reports say that Apple has added more transparency to the process of reviewing, approving and / or rejecting iPhone applications, by providing developers with a status application. Using the tool, developers will be able to track the progress of their application, see whether it’s waiting to be reviewed, or ready to hit the App Store. Since the debut of the iTunes App Store last year, Apple has been widely criticized for the way it has handled the application-approval process. It still is, to this day, although the company has strived to maintain a good relationship with developers, while handling the enormous intake of applications submitted each week by developers from all corners of the world. According to a Wired report cited by 9to5mac, “Apple’s previous review status system was terse and impersonal. All developers could see was a status graphic providing the average wait time for submitted apps. The bulletin would read, for example, ‘Based on current app submissions, 96 percent of applications are being approved within 14 days.’” Although the company is likely to erroneously approve or reject a few more apps until it can effectively adjust the process to the point it’s solid as law, it’s good to see the company is putting effort in...

OnyX, a general-purpose utility that enables users to optimize how OS X works, as well as to manage some of the processes behind most applications, has received a new maintenance update following its 2.1 Final release earlier this month. New in this version is a divided User and System Dialog Report, according to Titanium Software, as well as options to enable/disable the Exposé menu, show/hide the Spotlight icon, check at launch if the account is an administrator and an updated (and reindexed) Help menu. Released on the 26th of October, 2009, OnyX 2.1 Beta 5 delivered modifications primarily related to compatibility with Snow Leopard, according to Titanium Software, the maker of the utility. The developer also revealed that the app would no longer be installed from a .pkg file, but rather via drag and drop into the Applications folder, like most Mac apps today. Moreover, to uninstall OnyX, users can now access the main menu. The Universal Binary Onyx allows users to delete caches and remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome, acting as a cleaning utility as well. There's also the option to see detailed info of one's configuration and to save a Desktop before modifying and relaunching the Finder.
