When Amy Winehouse broke on the music scene with her beehive hairdo and dramatic makeup with winged eyeliner, she was seen as an oddity at best. Later on, as it became clear her own personal style was what made her such a fascinating celebrity, women all over started emulating her makeup and even her way of dressing. The spring of 2009 will also bow to Winehouse by bringing the bat-wing look back in the spotlight.

It doesn’t take an expert to pull off bat-wings, or a scientist to get them, stylists say. It doesn’t even take a certain hairdo or facial bone structure because this is one makeup trend that is highly versatile and flexible. All it takes is a good eyeliner, eyeshadow and lots and lots of practice. The result will be, without a single doubt, stunning and extremely elaborate-looking.

The winged look is, as noted above, particularly versatile in that there is not only one single way in which it can be got. From dramatic eyeliner to just a dash of eyeshadow to create the cat-eye effect, all combinations are possible, either for day makeup or for a night out in town. All eye shapes are a go, as also are all types of faces, be they round, square, or oval. Of course, the classiest look of the lot is the old-school glamour one, but that also requires special attention to the hair and the outfit, which may prove too much of an effort to pull before going to work in the morning.

Nevertheless, stylists share, almost the same striking effect can be achieved with the smoky eyes makeup. Suffice it for you to apply eyeshadow to get smoky eyes and then, towards the end, to make an elongated shadow with just one sweep of the brush. Make sure you first make it shorter, because it’s easier to “go long” afterwards than to try to make it go away, it is also being said.

Best of all, winged eyes also go terribly well with colorful makeup. Forget about black, gray and dark brown and replace them with electric blue or violet, and get those bat-wings that best bring out your eyes, stylists urge us. This spring is all about being bold and there’s no better way of doing this than going for the dramatic winged eyeliner.
