Twitter for iPad has just launched, bringing some nifty Multi-Touch functionality, and a multi-pane view allowing users to quickly preview incoming tweets that include audio and video, in addition to text.

Developed by Twitter, Inc., the iOS application bearing the same name is a client for users of Apple’s mobile devices, enabling them to discover what’s happening anywhere in the world via short timely updates from followers, and those whom they follow.

Key features of the app include realtime search, Top Tweets, trending topics and maps showing what’s happening now everywhere, and nearby.

Users can tweet, send DMs, share photos, videos and links to their friends and rest of the world, the developer says.

The software has recently received an update. Version 3.1 adds support for the Apple iPad, bringing tweets together with web pages, photos, and videos.

“Tap on any tweet, and a related content pane will open, displaying any linked content from the tweet, including web pages, profile information, hashtag searches and similar users,” the developer explains.

“Slide panels from side to side and quickly navigate through related content,” Twitter Inc. adds.

To quickly peek into a tweet, users can pinch to quickly unfold related information and actions, or use two fingers to drag on the tweet and reveal replies.

For those using Twitter for the first time, subscription is not required to download an give the iOS app a go.

Twitter Inc. has created a bunch of categories for users to play with, allowing them to draw a picture of what the service is all about.

“As always, you don't need a Twitter account, just download the application and try out all the categories we've created for you and give it a spin,” the company states.

Although version 3.1 of is specifically targeted at Apple iPad users, the app can be downloaded and used on any iOS device, including iPhone and iPod touch.

The only requirement is to have iOS 3.1 or later installed.
