Sad news for the ex-wrestler

The Gears of War franchise has a huge number of fans all around the world. Their dedication to the series created by Epic Games and brought to the Xbox 360 has been clear as the second installment, Gears of War 2, managed to sell extremely well.

As talks about the Gears of War movie are getting stronger and stronger, seeing as how the project has already received its director, Len Wiseman, of Live Free or Die Hard fame, and a writer, Chris Morgan, from Wanted, people flocked to the Gears of War panel at the San Diego Comic-Con last weekend.

There, the two movie-makers revealed a few interesting details about the project, but emphasized that nothing was concrete and that the project was still in the very early stages of development, so no publicity stills or casting announcements could be made.

But a question that was on everybody's mind is just what actors will play the main characters of the game, especially its protagonist, Marcus Fenix. We've already heard Morgan a few months ago express his hope that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would play that part, but Wiseman quickly disagreed, saying that he didn't want the former wrestler turned actor to bring the bad name of his other game-related project, Doom.

“A Doom connection would not be smart for us,” Wiseman revealed. He also said that his preferred way of choosing his actors wasn't throwing “a bunch of strongmen into the ring and see who comes out victorious. I'm looking for an actor for the role and then I'll put him into shape. I'm always thinking who could play the best Marcus. You want to get hooked into the character first and then all the amazing spectacle.”

It's nice to see that Wiseman doesn't want to make just another summer blockbuster, but you do have to consider the fact that Marcus Fenix isn't the most sensitive of all video game characters, so an actor with already high action credentials, like The Rock, would be a pretty good choice, at least in the opinion of many Gears fans.
