14 DAY TRIAL // As expected, this week's tabloids are still focusing on the Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes split. The National Enquirer, for one, claims to have an exclusive from one of Katie's relatives on how her life with Tom really was: just a more elegant form of captivity.
The second image attached to this article is the cover of the latest print issue of the tab (story via CB): clearly, the Enquirer is not sparing any punches on Tom.
Among the things it claims to have learned from a very reliable source is that Tom would verbally abuse Katie whenever he got the chance, sometimes even humiliating her in public.
He'd also turned their Beverly Hills mansion into a genuine “house of horrors,” where she would be constantly monitored and kept under control by his Scientology minions.
“The devout Scientologist and his minions subjected his wife to relentless verbal abuse, emotional punishment, humiliation and intimidation, sources say, until Katie decided to break free of the controversial religion,” the Enquirer writes.
About one year ago, when it became clear to her that Tom had every intention of raising their daughter Suri as a Scientologist, Katie stood up to him and told him that this could not be.
It was the breaking point in their relationship, the tab would have us believe, with the fight turning into a 4-day sermon from Cruise.
“Tom went nuts! He read Katie the riot act for four straight days until she was forced to apologize. Tom was verbally abusive and ordered Katie to never again mention her feelings about Scientology,” an insider explains.
“When Katie finally got her father on the phone, she was crying hysterically. She was suffering a breakdown. I think Katie’s family felt Tom was basically holding her a virtual captive,” the insider adds.
“Katie’s dad wanted her to see a professional therapist, but Tom refused. He said that if Katie had to see a counselor, it would be someone from Scientology,” notes the same source.
The Enquirer goes to great lengths to detail other occasions in which Tom made a show of telling Katie that he was the boss.
In an open letter obtained by The Hollywood Reporter (which you can see in full here), Tom's attorney is tackling many of the accusations brought against his client in the Enquirer issue. He also announces his intention to sue for libel.
