14 DAY TRIAL // Myths manage to stir many people's interest and curiosity. Even if most experts consider "Bigfoot" or "Sasquatch" to be just legends or a combination of folklore and hoaxes, there are some authors and researchers who believe they are real. They created the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) and are expected to visit Upper Peninsula, eastern Marquette County in July 12-15 to collect evidence of the existence of Bigfoot, but the exact locations are being kept confidential.
"We hope to accomplish several things. First is a direct sighting, and to record that sighting. We'll be looking for evidence supporting a presence. We are going to study the environment, which is typically remote. And we hope to meet local people who might have seen a Sasquatch or heard of someone else who had an encounter," Moneymaker said.
"Among all U.P. counties, Marquette County has logged the most reported Bigfoot sightings with four," he explained.
Bigfoot sightings have also been reported in Ontonagon, Baraga, Dickinson, Luce, Schoolcraft and Gwinn counties. "BFRO investigators chart potential "habitat zones" based on reported Bigfoot sightings, which now number in the thousands. In all but three of 30 previous expeditions in the United States and Canada, BFRO investigators have either glimpsed Bigfoot or gotten close enough to hear the creature. The BFRO, founded in 1995, has 202 member/investigators. A team of 50 investigators will participate in the Marquette expedition, being organized out of the BFRO Milwaukee offices. The organization has offices throughout North America, including Los Angeles and Montreal, and has received the endorsement of anthropologist Jane Goodall," Moneymaker said.
Some scientists believe Bigfoot could be a Gigantopithecus, a huge ape closely related to orangutans, which was three times bigger than a gorilla and survived till 100,000 years ago.
But the creature lived from Himalaya to Vietnam, not in North America, so a bigger chance of being real are the accounts from southwestern China mountains and Himalaya of the "Yeti" or "Snowman". Moreover, Yeti is described as red-haired, exactly how the modern orangutans are.
