Stars, it has often been noted, frequently forget that for a relationship to work, much work, compromise and patience are needed. Luckily, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, one of the most enduring celebrity couples, know differently. Speaking to Elle magazine not long ago, SJP revealed that it was, indeed, hard work to keep their love life out of the tabloids, so as to be able to enjoy it as they should. However, it is the key to their happy marriage, she also said. “It’s not hard to be a private couple. I see some people who actually do it really well, and then I see people who make me skeptical about their deep desire to be so private,” she explained.
Children are also a key element in family life, and SJP knows this only too well. Her secret to being a wife and mother is to leave her celebrity status at the door when she gets home, as she recently revealed in a recent interview. Everything is about finding balance, and she gets hers with Matthew and son James. “I try to be home to tuck him [James] in at least four nights a week, and if I’m not, he’s not letting me get away with anything,” the actress revealed.
Just like any other couple, celebrity or no celebrity, Sarah and Matthew have also learned to make plenty of compromises during the 11 years they have spent together as husband and wife. One of them is to never argue about small stuff, like things one of them would do and the other wouldn’t. “Every Sunday night I clean the house, organize, put things away, give things away, make stacks, blah, blah, blah. He has no interest. You know what? If that’s the biggest flaw, I gotta learn to live with that,” the actress admitted not long ago.
The last two things that have helped this celebrity duo stay by each other all this time are clearly related to their status as public persons. For one, they learned to draw a clear line between their professional and personal life, a distinction most Hollywood couples fail to make and that leads to bitter divorce. “When we get home, it’s nice to not really talk about work all that much, but big decisions I would always try to get her opinion on,” Matthew said in a recent interview.
However, not speaking all the time about work does not mean they’re not there for each other when they need support. On the contrary, Broderick says, it’s at times like these that they put up a united front. “I would always go to any premiere of hers unless I was working. Yeah, that’s part of the job of marriage,” the actor told the media not long ago.
All in all, it seems that Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick hold the secret answers for a perfect celebrity marriage. And, even if they didn’t and are only learning as they go, their love story, which translates into an amazing 11-year-old marriage, can’t but be truly admirable.
