Portia de Rossi surprises Ellen DeGeneres with special birthday message on her show

It’s perhaps one of the most iconic moments in celebrity culture: Marilyn Monroe singing happy birthday to President JFK in a ‘60s video. Yesterday, Portia de Rossi did the same for wife Ellen DeGeneres, with a twist.

The television personality’s birthday was yesterday and she decided to celebrate it first on her show, with birthday messages from all her celebrity friends, PopEater reports.

Ellen had not seen the messages, so it was all a surprise for her.

“Ellen DeGeneres turned 53 on Wednesday and was caught off-guard when producers organized a party during The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” PopEater reports.

“The star-studded affair, which included everyone from Pink and Julia Roberts to Colin Farrell and Jayden Smith, was full of surprises, but perhaps the highlight of the show was when DeGeneres’ wife, Portia de Rossi, channeled Marilyn Monroe in a surprise birthday greeting,” the same e-zine notes.

Indeed, Portia did her best Marilyn impersonation, dressed in a white dress and wearing the trademark blonde wig. There was a twist to her number, though.

After she wished Ellen a happy birthday singing to her in that whispery voice that the world loved so much about Marilyn, Portia suddenly found herself on her back with her feet up in the air.

As the video below will also show, she’s literally blown off her feet by a very strong gush of wind, which should have probably been directed in such a way as to recreate another iconic Marilyn moment – the one where her dress flies up.

Either way, Ellen was surprised by the original performance, as her reaction to it shows. She also asked Portia what made her do it, to which Portia replies “you will never know” with a smile.
