Microsoft software is still protecting a large number of computers worldwide, as Redmond’s Security Essentials and Windows Defender are now holding the second and the third places, respectively, in a top with the most used anti-virus products worldwide.

Data provided for the month of October 2013 shows that avast! Free Antivirus continues to lead the charts with a 19.6 percent market share, while Microsoft Security Essentials comes next with 17.2 percent.

Windows Defender, the full-time anti-virus product installed by default in Windows 8 and 8.1, is third with 7.8 percent of the market.

“The top ten products control 72.1% of the market,” OPSWAT said in the report. “As seen in past reports, Microsoft leads worldwide antivirus vendors with more than a quarter of the market, and Avast follows closely behind with 23.6%.”
