“The Dark Knight Rises,” Chris Nolan's third and last Batman installment, drops in theaters tomorrow, Friday, July 20. Today is the perfect day to get to know your geography before heading into the theater to see it.

This is where Batman lives, this is the city he protects.

Writer Bill Finger said in 1970s The Steranko History of Comics that he wanted Gotham to be like New York but not identical, to allow readers from all corners of the world to find something in it they could relate to.

“Originally I was going to call Gotham City 'Civic City.' Then I tried 'Capital City', then 'Coast City.' Then I flipped through the New York City phone book and spotted the name 'Gotham Jewelers' and said, 'That's it,' Gotham City,” he said.

“We didn't call it New York because we wanted anybody in any city to identify with it,” Finger added.
