Japanese mobile phone maker Sony has been long rumored to be working on the release of a new version of its Xperia Z1 smartphone, and some more leaked images with the device are now available for your viewing pleasure.

The handset was spotted a few times before with model number Sony D6503, and it might become official at the Mobile World Congress next month as an Xperia Z1 refresh, rumor has it.

The newly leaked images with the smartphone come from XDA-Developers Forum member iRimas, who also recently posted a series of images that show the handset’s outer design.

The device is expected to hit shelves as an upgraded version of the Xperia Z1, though the phone in said leaked images is only a prototype version, it appears.

According to some other forum members, the mobile phone could turn up to be the same Sony Xperia Sirius that was long said to be launched as the next flagship phone from the vendor.

When released, it should be running under firmware version 17.x.x.x.x, with a MSM8974AB chipset packed inside.

This means that the handset will feature a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the same as last year’s flagship mobile phone.

However, the new device might prove to be a bit larger, given that the latest reports on the matter suggest a 5.2-inch touchscreen display, most probably of only full HD (1080p) resolution.

Rumor has it that the phone would sport 3GB of RAM inside, 16GB of internal memory, LTE connectivity, and the same camera setup as Xperia Z1. It would run under Android 4.3 at launch (firmware 17.0.A.0.228), but with a new UI.

Should this be the aforementioned Sony Sirius, it means that the Japanese handset vendor has another flagship handset set to be unveiled sometime next year.

According to rumors, it could make it official at IFA 2014 in Berlin during fall, yet no confirmation on the matter has been provided as of now.

Specific details on the new mobile phone should emerge at MWC 2014 in February, when Sony might unveil it. The company could announce some other new devices as well at the event, so stay tuned to learn the news.
