The cybercriminals gained access to some credit card information

Last week, Harbor Freight Tools started notifying customers that some of their financial details might have been compromised after hackers breached the company’s payment processing system.

According to Eric Smidt, the company’s president, only customers who made transactions between May 6, 2013 and June 30, 2013 are impacted. In most cases, only track 2 data has been exposed. This includes card number, expiration date and the CVV.

The cybercriminals might have also obtained the cardholder’s name, but only for less than 1% of transactions.

Harbor Freight Tools has started sending out notification letters to the customers whose addresses they have. Notices have been posted in every store and on the company’s website to alert the others.

An IT security firm has been called in to investigate the incident.

Impacted individuals are advised to keep a close eye on their bank accounts for any unauthorized transactions. Harbor Freight Tools is not offering any credit protection services.
