Android 2.3.x Gingerbread is being loaded on more and more devices that arrive on shelves with Google's mobile operating system on board.

During the two weeks period ended on October 3rd, 2011, the platform flavor was loaded on 38.7 percent of all Android devices that accessed the Android Market, recent data from Google shows.

This marks an important increase from last month's 31.3 percent share. However, we should note that Android 2.3.3 - Android 2.3.7 OS releases were loaded on 38.2 percent devices, and that Android 2.3 - Android 2.3.2 flavors account for only 0.5 percent of them.

Android 2.2 Froyo, the previous major OS release from Google, was present on 45.3 percent of all active devices in the said time frame, down from 51.2 percent it accounted for last month.

Honeycomb, the platform iteration that Google pushed out with optimizations for tablet PCs, was loaded on 1.8 percent of devices in the past two weeks, Google unveiled.

However, it should be noted that Android 3.0 accounted for 0.2 percent of devices, Android 3.1 was loaded on 0.9 percent of them, while Android 3.2 was powering 0.7 percent of all active Android devices in the time frame.

Older flavors of Android are losing even more ground in front of newcomers, with Android 2.1 Eclair down to only 11.7 percent of active devices, while Android 1.6 Donut was present on only 1.4 percent of them, and Android 1.5 Cupcake loaded on 1.1 percent devices.

Before the month is over, Google is expected to launch a new OS flavor, namely Ice Cream Sandwich, and we might see a different Android platform distribution chart when Google publishes new data on early November.

The next Android release is expected to bring forth features suitable for both smartphones and tablet PCs, at least this is what Google has been promising for quite some time now.
