Red 5 Entertainment, as the developer, has announced that it is working together with well-known science fiction author Orson Scott Card to create the story of its upcoming free-to-play PC-based video game Firefall.

The author is also set to write the lines for an upcoming manga novel that will be based around the video game.

The manga will be created by artists at Udon Entertainment and will also get input from the daughter of the writer, Emily Janice Card, with the launch date set for later this year.

The manga will be offered for free, as will the video game.

Speaking in a video diary Card stated, “I got involved with the game Firefall because the guys from Red 5 invited me to. Since I think the game is a great one -- the story that they're developing is exciting -- I was delighted to be a part of it.”

Mark Kern, who is the chief executive officer at developer Red 5 Studios, has added, “It's an absolute honor to welcome Orson Scott Card to the Red 5 family as an honorary member of The Tribe. Orson understands us as a studio, what we represent and gets the vision we have for Firefall.”

The set-up for Firefall is that a catastrophe affects the whole of humanity, but advanced technology remains available for the survivors who will need to rebuild the world while fighting off a number of mysterious and powerful monsters.

Orson Scott Card made headlines when he created the story of the Chair Entertainment made Xbox Live Arcade title Shadow Complex, prompting some players to boycott the game because of the author's views on same sex relationships.

Chair was also set to create a video game based on Scott Card's Ender's Game graphics novel, but that projects has been canceled last year.
