As weeks pass by, more and more mobile phones running under the new Android 2.2 Froyo operating system emerge into the wild, helping this platform iteration gain more ground on the Android distribution charts.

According to the latest data made public by Android Developers, the Android 2.2 Froyo platform version is now present on 33.4 percent of all Android-based devices out there.

In early September, the Android 2.2 platform was present on 28.7 percent of active handsets out there, and it seems that it managed to gain about 5 percentage points in the meantime.

However, the Android 2.1 OS, currently the most widespread platform version, won't leave the leading position so easily.

While present on 41.7 percent of the active devices out there in early September, the OS flavor is now present on around 40.4 percent of them.

The data presented above was collected during a two weeks time frame ended October 1st, the guys over at the Android Developers note.

Android 1.6 and Android 1.5, the other two iterations of the OS present on the charts, went down to 16.4 percent and 9.7 percent of all active handsets out there.

According to Google, these numbers are offered mainly to developers, so that they have a better idea of the Android distribution on devices, and they would know which platform version to target with their applications.

However, others see this from a different point of view, and they say that these charts would show the fragmentation that Google's Android platform is hit by.

On way or the other, Google did say at one point that newer platform versions, including Android 2.2 Froyo or Android 3.0 Gingerbread would bring more unity to the OS.

The next flavor of Android is expected to arrive before the end of the ongoing year with great optimizations for use on Tablet PCs, which seem to create the latest trend on mobile devices area.
