The Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, the latest flavor of Google's platform for mobile devices, is currently accounting for the largest number of active Android-based devices on the market. Until several weeks ago, the Android 2.1 version of the mobile platform was the most used OS iteration when the distribution charts were involved, but it seems that the newest flavor has managed to take the lead.

Based on data collected during the two weeks ending on December 1st, 2010, Android 2.2 was present on 43.4 percent of the Android mobile phones on the market, while the Android 2.1 platform accounted for only 39.6 percent of them.

Older platform flavors, namely Android 1.6 and Android 1.4, are slowly becoming obsolete, though they still are present on a large number of devices.

Android 1.6 runs on 10.6 percent of active devices, while Android 1.5 can be found on 6.3 percent of them.

You can take a closer look at the platform distribution charts attached to this article to learn more on how much of the Android area goes to each OS variant.

We should note that the charts were based on the number of Android devices that have accessed the Android Market during the two weeks prior December 1st. More on this can be found on Android Developers here.

As stated above, Android 2.2 Froyo is currently present on the largest number of Android devices out there, but the distribution chart might change in the not too far future.

A newer version of the platform is expected to make an appearance on the market very soon, namely Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with a nice range of enhancements included into the mix.

Of course, it would take some time before the platform distribution changes in Gingerbread's favor. For example, Android 2.2 needed about six months from when it was initially announced until it took the lead.

However, since the mobile platform was not announced officially as of yet, it still remains to be seen what exactly it would bring new when released.
