Last night, at the 2010 American Music Awards, the industry celebrated the best artists and acts of today. While due attention was paid to the winners, about the same amount of attention went to the red carpet ceremony, where stars did their best to shine in the latest creations.

Judging from what the ladies chose to wear, the predominant tendencies of the night were glamorous and funky, with the stars trying their best to stand out from the crowd in either.

To kick off the “glamorous” selection, here’s Taylor Swift. The country cutie opted for a rather basic mini-dress (in cut and design, at least), made even more drastic by a new ‘do.

The once-curly Taylor, now with straight hair and bangs, looked positively show-stopping in a studded Collette Dinnigan dress, matched with jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and Jimmy Choo shoes, as JustJared informs.

The usually colorful and naughty Katy Perry, who has made a name for herself for the latex dresses she’s so fond of and colorful prints of sweet treats she chooses for every outfit, played it very cool at the AMAs.

The newly-named Mrs. Russell Brand opted for a pink, strapless and body-hugging Badgley Mischka Couture dress, which she paired with Brian Atwood shoes, a Brumani bracelet, and Pink Tourmaline and Pave earrings by VRAM for GRAY.

While it was quite a shock to see Perry toning it down so much, even more shocking was Rihanna’s choice of a dress. With her fire-engine red hair, the hitmaker looked the closest thing to a living, breathing goddess.

A golden rule of fashion says never wear red on the red carpet, for obvious reasons. Rihanna is one of the few exceptions because this was probably one of her most beautiful outfits to date.

She wore a scarlet long sleeve gown with floral detailing that protected her modesty by Elie Saab, from the Fall / Winter 2010 Haute Couture line, accessorized with Louboutins and Neil Lane sparklers.

Miley Cyrus and Jessica Alba were also quite dashing, with the Disney pop star opting for a statement dress by Marchesa, very short in the front and with a trail and huge bow in the back, Christian Louboutin shoe pumps, and jewelry by Neil Lane.

Alba, on the other hand, underplayed it a black, very structured, one-shoulder Cushnie et Ochs dress, with jewels by Aandra Neen, Louboutins and an Aandra Neen bag.

Now for the funky: the incredibly toned and tanned Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas sparkled in a Falguni & Shane peacock dress, with feather-y shoulders and lots of glitter. She also rocked Ruthie Davis “Spikette” shoes, a clutch by Rene Caovilla, and Loree Rodkin jewels.

Ke$ha was definitely the leader of the pack in this category, staying true to herself and her previous public appearances by opting for the shock factor.

The pop star walked the red carpet in a custom-made black dress, a fake Mohawk, dark metallic gray lipstick and studded eyebrows. She was also heavily accessorized with rings.

Nicki Minaj and newcomer Willow Smith, the 9-year-old daughter of actor Will Smith, were also very colorful on the red carpet though, knowing them, it’s not really that much of a surprise.

Minaj, described as the style child of Lady Gaga and Rihanna, donned a sleeveless cocktail dress by Manish Arora, while Willow, the youngest fashionista on the scene right now, wowed in a custom-made outfit made of a gray romper with matching gloves and a yellow, one-shoulder sleeve with buckles.
