Rumors on the upcoming ZTE flagship have been surfacing for quite some time now and even the CEO released an image of the new ZTE model. Now, new information shows that the next ZTE flagship will be named Axon 7, not Axon 2 as it was previously believed.

Last year, ZTE Axon series welcomed two models, the Axon and Axon Pro, which had decent specs and managed to increase the company’s popularity on the smartphone market.

It was previously rumored that the ZTE would name the next model Axon 2, but it seems that company officials have changed their mind and decided to go with Axon 7. One guess is that ZTE intends to compete directly against the upcoming iPhone 7 series models in China.

Leaked images of the upcoming Axon 7 show a sleek and minimalistic design, as company officials highlighted the fact that the screws at the bottom were removed. Pictures also show a comparison between the iPhone 6Ss, Huawei P9 and the Axon 7.

The high-resolution 2K display from Sharp has been confirmed on the new ZTE Axon 7 and the new smartphone will come with front facing speakers and possibly Hi-Fi support, as well.

5.5-inch display and Snapdragon 820 SoC inside

Although there isn’t any official information on the specs, some details have surfaced. Axon 7 showed up on a TENAA certification listing, revealing that the device will have a 5.5-inch, QHD (1440 x 2560 pixels) display with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

It will also pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC 64-bit quad-core processor and Adreno 530 GPU for graphics. The back camera is quite impressive, 20MP and 8MP in the front shooter. Battery capacity should be enough to offer a fluent user experience, with 3,140mAh and the device will come with Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 out of the box.

The device will be available in the Gold variant only and weigh 175 grams while measurements reach 154 x 77 x 9.8mm. The release date is scheduled for May 26 and ZTE already sent out invites to the phone’s launch event, held in China.
