Although it's well-known among customers for its cheap, unimpressive products, ZTE surprised the audience at MWC 2017 with the introduction of a unique device, the Gigabit Phone.

As the name suggests, the phone has been especially designed to provide users with blazing fast download speeds. According to Zdnet, the new handset from ZTE can offer download speeds of up to 1Gbps, something that no other smartphone achieved until now.

The amazing download speeds that the Gigabit Phone can provide are possible thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip inside, which features an integrated Snapdragon X16 LTE modem.

Moreover, ZTE claims it uses a mix of carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO antenna technology, and 256-QAM modulation to attain high LTE download speeds, which are 10 times faster than the first-generation LTE devices.

But that's not all, as ZTE states the Gigabit Phone uses its proprietary Pre5G+ MBB solution, which is supposed to be three times better at improving data processing capability over the current networks.

It's more akin to a concept phone

Unfortunately, it's unclear whether the ZTE Gigabit Phone is more of a concept than a device aimed at mass market. What's clear is the smartphone won't be available for purchase anytime soon, and ZTE is mum on its release.

However, the Chinese company was quick to advertise its new device by saying its smartphone would allow 360-degree VR, instant cloud storage, as well as streaming of HQ music and movies.

Even if ZTE plans to launch the Gigabit Phone on the market, that won't happen until April / May since the device has been confirmed to pack Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 CPU inside, which won't be commercially available until after the Galaxy S8's release in late April.

The good news is the so-called “5uper Generation smartphone” announced by ZTE is now showcased at the company's booth at Mobile World Congress (MWC) until March 2.
