Google releases important update for YouTube app

Google has released an update for the YouTube app on iOS that finally addresses the battery issues that iPhone users experienced lately.

Now at version 12.45, YouTube for iOS doesn’t include anything else than a fix “for an issue with battery usage,” which is living proof that Google has been well aware of the complaints from the Apple community and silently worked on a patch.

YouTube has slowly become one of the main battery hogs on iOS, with lots of iPhone users giving up on the official client and looking for alternatives just because battery usage reached record levels. Unfortunately, several third-party YouTube clients for the iPhone were pulled from the App Store lately, so options in this regard were quite limited, with many deciding instead to stick with the browser version of YouTube.

Using YouTube in the browser comes with several limitations as well, including the lack of HD support, which is obviously a major setback when comparing it with the official client.

iPhone X updates

And while Google has apparently managed to fix the battery issues in YouTube on iOS (though it remains to be seen how the app uses battery power in different scenarios), the company still has a lot of work to do in the Apple ecosystem, especially because its apps are not yet optimized for the iPhone X.

Gmail, for example, which is currently one of the top email apps on both Android and iOS, does not come with full support for the iPhone X, so instead of taking advantage of the new UI that’s available on the anniversary iPhone with a notch, it displays black bars at the top and the bottom. This made many people switch to different third-party email apps or stick with the default Mail app even for Gmail accounts.

It remains to be seen when Google ships updates for the iPhone X, but for the time being, it’s good that at least the YouTube app works just like it was supposed to from the very beginning.
