Microsoft, Token working on ring with Windows Hello support

Windows Hello is about to get enhanced with an awesome new device, as Microsoft has confirmed that it’s working with Token on building a smart ring that would support the flagship Windows 10 biometric system.

Windows Hello supports authentication with a wide array of technologies, including cameras and fingerprint readers, and now with the upcoming ring, it will be possible to reach the desktop with nearly no effort.

Microsoft explains that more than 80 percent of users stick with the same password across multiple websites and accounts, with some have as many as 30 accounts that are configured with the same password. This obviously increases the risk of getting hacked, as a simple breach of one services opens the door to hackers to compromise other accounts as long as the same password is used.

“Log in credentials are such an important layer in securing your device because malicious actors can use social engineering, phishing, or keylogging techniques to steal passwords from your device, or compromise the server where the passwords are stored,” Microsoft says.

Most likely launching in September

The software giant does not provide too many details as to how the smart ring is going to work, but it says in a statement that it’s working with more partners on bringing a growing number of such devices to the market.

“Microsoft designed Windows Hello to help enable people to move to a password alternative that is fast and has enterprise-grade security from the online threats and we’re thrilled to work with Token to make the Windows Hello experience even better. With its simple design, Token – a biometric identity ring changing the way you prove and protect your identity by streamlining the process of authentication throughout your day – logs you into Windows 10 seamlessly in a way that feels natural and familiar,” Microsoft says.

Most likely, the new ring will go live in September when the company takes the wraps off the Fall Creators Update. The new update is currently in preview stage and is available to insiders through preview builds.
