The new fork includes the Refracta tools

GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton announced recently that he managed to create a remix of Raspberry Pi Foundation's Raspbian with PIXEL desktop operating system for PC and Mac.

If you've been reading the news lately, you should be aware of the fact that Raspberry Pi Foundation modified their widely-used, Debian-based Raspbian GNU/Linux distribution for Raspberry Pi single-board computers, with the new PIXEL desktop environment, to work on x86 computers and Macs.

When we said "modified" above, we actually meant to say that there's a new spin of Raspbian PIXEL, which you can use on your PC or Mac, but there's a catch. It appears that there's currently no installer included in this image to deploy the Linux-based operating system on your personal computer or laptop.

"I saw immediately that there was no installer included, which I thought was a little disappointing. Come to think of Refracta tools, which work very well in Debian and Ubuntu. I quickly made a “remix” of the Raspberry Pi Foundation PIXEL image. My remix thus includes Refracta tools," said Arne Exton in the announcement.

Create your own Raspbian PIXEL image with Refracta tools

As you can see, Mr. Exton is hard at work as usual, and he managed to create a remix of Raspberry Pi Foundation's Raspbian with PIXEL image that's installable on x86 PCs, and also included the well-known Refracta tools to allow users to create their own custom spins of the GNU/Linux distribution.

Powered by Linux kernel 3.16.0-4-686 PAE (Physical Address Extension), which increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB, Arne Exton's Debian Raspberry Pi PIXEL Build 161223 is now available for download for those who want to take it for a test drive.

We invite you to check out the gallery below to see Debian Raspberry Pi PIXEL Build 161223 in action, and study the full package list if you're curious to know what applications are pre-installed in this remix. For more details on how to use Refracta tools, don't hesitate to check out Arne Exton's instructions.
