As part of today's massive Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) release, the Xubuntu 17.04 official flavor landed for fans of the lightweight Xfce desktop environment with more optimizations and the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

Xubuntu 17.04 is not a major milestone, especially that it's a short-lived release supported with security updates for only nine months from today, until mid-January 2018. However, it does bring various improvements and updates several apps and plugins to the latest GTK+ 3 technologies.

"Several Xfce panel plugins and applications have been ported to GTK+ 3, paving the way for improved theming and further development," reads today's announcement. "Core Xfce libraries exo and libxfce4ui have also been updated with full GTK+ 3 support, the latter adding support for Glade development."

You'll need to install the libxfce4ui-glade package for Glade support in Xubuntu 17.04, which restores the camera functionality in the Mugshot tool designed for updating the personal details of users. Furthermore, both Numix and Greybird themes have been updated to support the latest GTK+ 3 toolkit.

Parole, Thunar and Ristretto get more improvements

Among other Xfce applications that received improvements in the Xubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) release, we can mention the Parole Media Player, which now features a new mini mode and better support for network streams, the Ristretto image viewer and Thunar file manager, both receiving a large number of fixes.

New apps include Portable Puzzle Collection (sgt-puzzles) developed by Simon Tatham, which is a collection of addicting logic games, as well as the brand-new SGT Puzzles Collection (sgt-launcher). The LibreOffice 5.3 office suite, Mozilla Firefox 52.0 web browser, and Thunderbird 45.8 email client are also pre-installed.

Just like Ubuntu 17.04, Xubuntu 17.04 is powered by the Linux 4.10 kernel and ships with an up-to-date graphics stack based on the latest Mesa 17.0.3 3D Graphics Library and X.Org Server 1.19.3 display server. You can download Xubuntu 17.04 right now from our website or upgrade from a previous release.
