14 DAY TRIAL // The first point release of the Xubuntu 16.04 LTS computer operating system has been officially published as part of the Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS (Xenial Xerus) announcement earlier in the week.
Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS is the first of many to come maintenance updates, which will be published during the 3-year life cycle support of this official Ubuntu flavor build around the lightweight and fast Xfce 4.12 desktop environment, and it's mainly a collection of software updates and security patches.
However, the most important aspect of the Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS release is that it opens up the upgrade path from the Xubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system. Therefore, if you're using Xubuntu 14.04.4 LTS, you should have received an upgrade notification.
Some bugs are still present after the upgrade
If you decide that it's time to upgrade your Xubuntu 14.04 LTS installation to Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, you should be aware of a few known issues. For example, the proprietary AMD Radeon video driver has been deprecated, the Thunar file manager still has some quirks, and it looks like the mouse cursor might disappear when returning from lock.
"Thunar is the subject of a few bugs, though they all appear to revolve around similar issues. We have 2 patches applied that, while not completely fixing the issue, do lessen the impact," reads the announcement. "When returning from lock, the cursor disappears on the desktop, you can bring the cursor back with Ctrl+Alt+F1 followed by Ctrl+Alt+F7."
In addition to the bugs mentioned above, which are also detailed in the official release notes of Xubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), there's an Intel cursor issue. The bug is still under investigation, and it will be fixed in the coming weeks.
