During this year’s Mobile World Congress held in February, Sony announced a series of new wearable devices to go with its smartphones. However, only Xperia Ear was showcased as a prototype while Xperia Eye, Xperia Agent, and Xperia Projector were simply presented as ideas.

Xperia Ear is an earpiece that connects to Xperia smartphones via Bluetooth. It acts as a voice-controlled personal assistant, and it’s only compatible with Android handsets, allowing users to answer calls, send messages and emails, get traffic updates, check local weather and more.

Users can get directions to a specific destination as the earpiece is compatible with Google Now. Clearly, Sony intended to provide more functionality to the Xperia Ear than just a simple hands-free.

Communications work both ways on the Xperia Ear, in the sense that users can ask for news reports, messages, and weather information to be narrated, and they can also initiate calls or even dictate quick messages. Sony’s Xperia Ear is said to have a battery that can last the whole day, and it comes with a system that detects when the user puts it on.

Xperia Ear weighs 6.8 grams and will be available in late summer

Xperia Ear carries a weight of 6.8g and measures 29.3 x 15.2 x 25.2mm. It comes with IPX2 protection from dripping water. The earpiece has a single hardware button that allows users to control the technology and connect to the smartphone.

The earpiece connects to multiple Sony smartphones, including the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia X Performance, Xperia X, and Xperia XA.

The Xperia Ear will be available in Canada in about two or three months, and Sony is expected to make it available in other markets as well. However, details about the price are unknown at this point.
