As we’ve been anticipating these last few weeks, Xiaomi has just announced the Redmi Note 2 mid-range Android smartphone, which has seen a few delays so far due to unknown reasons. Luckily, the phone has just made its official debut and we’re here to detail the newcomer for you.

The handset takes advantage of a spacious 5.7-inch display with full HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) resolution and bundles a MediaTek MT6795 chipset (or Helio X10) with eight Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz, plus PowerVR G6200 GPU, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage.

In the photography department, the phone carries a 13MP main camera plus a 5MP frontal shooter for selfie-taking. The back camera (with both Samsung and OmniVision mentioned as suppliers) arrives with phase-detection autofocus and focus speeds of 0.1 seconds.

Other specifications include Wi-Fi, dual-SIM, 4G option and a 3,020 mAh battery. The handset is the first in the Xiaomi lineup to come out with the company’s new MIUI 7 custom ROM, which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is very affordable

As is the case with Xiaomi mid-rangers, the Redmi Note 2 will be made available in several color combinations including white, pink, black, brown and light blue. Xiaomi says that the 32GB variant of the phone will go on sale as the Redmi 2 Prime and will cost you $160 / €143.

The phone does look very sleek in the renders and MIUI 7 seems to have gotten an interesting reinterpretation. However, don’t kid yourself, as at this price the Redmi Note 2 is made of plastic.

The regular variant with TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE will sell for $144 / €129, while the entry-level model with TDD-LTE and TD-SCDMA will be sold for only $128 / €115.

Xiaomi has yet to detail any changes for its MIUI 7, but we are reminded that the ROM will see a global launch on August 19 in New Delhi.
