14 DAY TRIAL // Xiaomi didn’t attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year, but that didn’t stop the company from announcing a new and exciting smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 5c. The new smartphone comes with Xiaomi’s own Surge S1 processor.
The Pinecone Surge S1 processor is a 64-bit octa-core chipset with four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. It’s built using the 28nm process and coupled with ARM Mali-T860 MP4 graphics processing unit. It also comes with a 32-bit DSP for better voice processing for calls and dual microphones for noise reduction.
Xiaomi says that the Pinecone Surge S1 outperforms Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 SoC and supports smartphone display resolutions of up to 2,560 x 1,600 pixels. The chipset won’t be competing against high-end offerings, but its launch marks Xiaomi’s entry in the category of smartphone companies that also develop chipsets, just like Apple or Samsung.
Xiaomi Mi 5c will be made available in China on March 3
Xiaomi Mi 5c comes with a 5.15-inch Full HD display, which means a pixel resolution of 1,080 x 1,920. The phone has a curved glass screen with a pixel density of 428ppi. The display has up to 550-nit brightness capacity and comes with 1.66mm ultra-thin bezels.
It features 3GB of RAM, 64GB of internal memory and a 2,860mAh non-removable battery with support for fast charging.
Rear camera capacity reaches 12MP with 1.25μm large pixel size, while the front camera has an 8MP capacity with smart beauty 3.0 feature. The phone’s body is made out of metal and it weighs 132 grams. Xiaomi Mi 5c runs Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and features a fingerprint reader embedded in the home button on the front.
The Xiaomi Mi 5c is offered exclusively in China, which means that it won’t be made available in other countries. The phone will carry a price tag of about $220 and is expected to reach stores on March 3.
