Video game developer Blizzard is announcing that it is working on a new feature for World of Warcraft which will allow gamers to actually enter the Player versus Player modes as combatants for the opposing side in order to earn rewards.

The gamer will become a mercenary and can then get access to the same items that they would if they fought for their own faction, although achievements are not included.

Blizzard explains in the official announcement that "You’ll also have your race automatically changed into one appropriate for the opposite faction while you’re still inside the Battleground or Ashran. Perhaps most importantly, however, you’ll experience much shorter queue times, as our matchmaking system will be able to fill up groups much quicker!"

The entire feature will only be activated if wait times get too long, although the company is not saying what the cutoff is.

The new Mercenary feature for World of Warcraft will be first offered on the Pubic Test Realm, although the company is not yet talking about an official date.

Gamers are also invited to offer their feedback on the mechanic in order to make sure that it is carefully tailored to appeal to gamers by the time it is delivered for the entire player population of the MMO.

World of Warcraft needs new features to keep gamers engaged

The Mercenary Mode is a good way to reduce waiting time, although it is unclear whether Alliance or Horde loyalists will be willing to work with the other side, even if they get their own faction rewards.

Blizzard has been long working on new functionality for World of Warcraft in order to make sure that the MMO keeps as many of its subscribers as possible.

Rumors are suggesting that a new full expansion for the title might be revealed during the fall, possibly at the BlizzCon event.

World of Warcraft is the only mainstream representative of its genre that has a solid population even if it charges a monthly subscription.

Fans can currently get access to a special Archon pet for the title as long as they pick up the Deluxe Digital Edition of the new Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void title.
