World of Warcraft started as a conflict between two races: orcs and humans. They later evolved in two major factions – Alliance and Horde – each comprising of different races (dwarves, elves, tauren, goblin, undead etc.).

The new Battle for Azeroth expansion returns to the roots and focuses on the conflict between these two factions. The new add-on contains three new zones for Horde players, which form the islands of Zandalar, as well as three zones for Alliance players that are called Kul Tiras.

According to Blizzard, Alliance and Horde players will work within the confines of these zones to try and recruit new “allied races” which will allow them to play as themselves.

There will be six “allied races” that Alliance and Horde players will be able to recruit: Highmountain Tauren (Horde), Lightforged Draenei (Alliance), Nightborne (Horde), Void Elf (Alliance), Zandalari Trolls (Horde) and Dark Iron Dwarves (Alliance).

Also, a new island system will be introduced with the Battle for Azeroth expansion, which enables players to team up in a party of three to explore various areas that contain randomly chosen enemies and encounters.

Another PvP mode called “warfronts” will pit two groups of 20 players against each other, which will fight to control strategic locations that will offer various bonuses to their faction.

Story-wise, Blizzard revealed that Battle for Azeroth is a race for the discovery of a new legendary necklace called the Heart of Azeroth. Players who find and equip the item will be given access to new powers and traits via their armor.

The developers will probably use the same upgrading system from the previous Legion expansion where players could improve their artifact weapon numerous times.

Although Blizzard did not mention when Battle for Azeroth will be launched, it's likely that the expansion will be made available sometime next year.
