14 DAY TRIAL // A Chinese woman has attempted to smuggle no more, no less than 102 iPhones into the country, but she got caught after the customs officers noticed her unusual warm clothing in the middle of the summer.
A report from Chinese-based XMNN reveals that the woman was caught by the police with a total of 102 iPhones organized on 4 different layers that were taped to her torso and waist. The iPhones were then covered with winter clothes, despite the hot weather in the country.
For what it’s worth, it’s pretty hot in Shenzhen these days, with the temperature to reach 29 degrees Celsius later today (that’s approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit for our American readers out there).
So while the woman was pretty clever to strap the 102 Apple smartphones around her body on four different layers, she actually failed the more important test and got caught by the customs officers simply because it looked ridiculous.
A record nobody can break
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that what some are describing as “unusual body proportions” could make you look suspect, but the woman will certainly have more time to think of a more ingenious smuggling method during the next few years she’ll spend in prison.
As for the reasons why some people do that, it’s hard to comment on this, though it goes without saying that selling original iPhones in a country that’s full of clones is quite a moneymaking recipe.
But as iDropNews notes, most people get caught while attempting to smuggle iPhones into the country, and the most famous case happened in 2014 when a man tried to get through the security checks with no less than 146 iPhones strapped to his body.
So the next time you complain that your iPhone 7 Plus is super-heavy at 188 grams, just think that the 2014 smuggler was carrying no less than 27.4 kg worth of iPhones.
