The Wine Staging team continues to track the development of the upcoming Wine 2.0 software application for running Windows apps and games on Linux systems, and they released today the sixth, and probably the last, Release Candidate (RC) build.

Based on last week's Wine 2.0 RC6 development release, Wine Staging 2.0 Release Candidate 6 introduces emulation of deferred rendering contexts, along with a bunch of various Direct3D 11 graphics enhancements and improvements to the reading of ole32 property storages.

All the 21 bugs fixed upstream in the sixth Wine 2.0 Release Candidate build have also been implemented in Wine Staging 2.0 RC6, including those for the 3DMark11 installer, FIFA 2000 Demo, Visual Web Developer Express 2008, Virtualdub, Tompi Jones, Battle.net launcher, KSP Trajectory Optimization Tool, and NO$GBA 2.6a debugger.

Wine 2.0 and Wine Staging 2.0 are just around the corner

We know, it's not much, but we have to appreciate the fact that the hard-working developers behind the Wine and Wine Staging software projects are doing a tremendous job patching every last bug before the final releases of their beloved applications hit the streets later this month.

That's right, it won't be long until we can update to Wine 2.0 and Wine Staging 2.0 for running the latest Windows games and apps on our Linux-based operating systems. These are major updates that will introduce a large number of improvements and new features, such as support for playing the DOOM 2016 game.

At the moment of writing this article, we have no idea if there will be a seventh Release Candidate version of Wine or Wine Staging. Probably not, if no critical blockers are found, but you can help with the testing by downloading Wine 2.0 RC6 or Wine Staging 2.0 RC6 tarballs right now from our website and compiling it for your system.

Of course, please try to keep in mind that these are pre-release versions, which should not be used on a production machine. We recommend waiting for the final Wine 2.0 and Wine Staging 2.0 versions to be released before updating your stable installations.
